Zhamso Radnaev - Жамсо Раднаев





''Zhamso Radnaev graduated from Krasnoyarsk Art Institute of the Russian Art Academy. Teaches at Ulan-Ude Art School. In 1999 he became a Laureate of Sampilov Prize*. Participated in Republican art exhibits.

His country childhood, innocence and purity of child's soul, simplicity and wisdom of life on the land and with the land are "heroes" of his paintings.

''The art of Zhamso Radnaev attracts attention of the spectator with it’s special world. It is the world, in which the unsophisticated characters live, and, it seems, that the artist has seen them directly in life and simply "has transferred" on the canvases. Peering at the pictures, one understands, that there is nothing casual. Everything is reconsidered and passed through the special gift and imagination of the artist. This vision was generated certainly due to the deep penetration into national culture of Buryatia and history of native land. Zhamso Radnaev has organic adaptation of national traditions.

External construction and the plots of his paintings are far from the stories and formal receptions of old painting of Buryatiya closely connected to traditions of the Tibetan religious painting. Executed in the constrained colour scale, the works of Zhamso differ from bright decorative art of the old Buryat foremen, and they force to recollect Russian school of painting with its three-dimensional space and division into the plans. It’s important to recollect Zhamso Radnaev’s education in Krasnoyarsk art institute and traditions of secular easel painting that have been developed in the Buryat art in the first half XX of century, the example to this can be the creativity of the national artist of Buryatia Tsyrenzhap Sampilov. Zhamso develops organic language leaning on traditions: it is difficult to imagine in what other language it is possible to tell about his nice characters.

In spite of the external ordinary of many plots of Zhamso Radnaev’s paintings, it is impossible to relate genre to simple household sketches. It is impossible to define in what historical time his characters live, involved in eternal circulation of the nature. The plots of his arts can be ranked to the steady motives of painting. These motives have bright national coloring on the one hand and are universal - with another.

Children are the characters of his works. The artist offers the spectator to look at the world by the children's eyes and to discover it anew. In the "Morning", where the child who has come outdoor in the winter morning is represented the ambiguous sense as it’s seen in the name. The morning is simply the beginning of a new winter day and the beginning of life of the man, who just clears the world with its colors and light. The artist builds a composition of a picture for the spectator’s looks on occurring around with the eyes of a boy looking at a shed. There are figures of the cows through the shining windows of a wooden building and it seems any hidden line connects all world, both the boy and the animals, and all environmental nature, and even a utensils placed of structures. In spite of the fact that Zhamso shows frosty winter morning, the whole composition is looking warm and cosy.

The paintings of Zhamso Radnaev are distinguished with expressiveness of the image not only in basic characters, but also in the details carrying the large semantic meaning and consequently it is difficult to name them minor. The landscapes of the artist are occupied by the birds and animals. The nature in his works is alive, and the man is directly connected with it. In such an approach to the image the philosophy of perception of the world by the Buryats is felt not only in personal vision of the artist, but also in general, cosmogonic in the basis. This philosophy developed by centuries and it is connected both to religion and natural experience of the nomadic people.

The connection of Radnaev’s creativity with mythology, with a national fairy tales is unconditional. There’s no doubt when looking on his "Fight". It looks natural the battle and the riders with the arrows in the skies . The children observe it and though they are admired occurring that is not perceived by them as something out of the common leaving. Thus the artist manages to convince and spectator in the authenticity occurring: with such degree of reliability the image is executed. There are authentic figurea of the boys sitting in characteristic poses at the fence, the landscape with both the green meadow and the wood. The earth and the sky are perceived in a picture as a single unit, that distinguishes jobs Zhamso Radnaev in general.

Continuing conversation on connection of creativity of the foreman with fantastic folklore in the other workof the artist. His painting "Moon" causes direct associations with a known Buryat fairy tale "Girl - moon". Representing on a canvas the world of a fairy tale, in which "the animals talked to children ", thus Zhamso Radnaev does not illustrate a fairy tale. With all the stories of creativity of the artist it never happens to be illustrative. Expressiveness of the canvas the artist achieves by only picturesque means. The color unity of the sky, ground and all figures represented on the "Moon" is soft lunar light that covers the landscape and force the grass to shine - all that makes an atmosphere of singularity and fairy tale.

The landscape in the Zhamso Radnaev paintings is not simply a background, it is filled with the great sense. Everything, that is presented there in the paintings, appears naturally in the country: the first concert of the small singer, circus performance, love, dream, and even drinking or fight - all this occurs under the heaven in the open spaces of the earth.

The direct connection of the man with the earth, with space, that was determined for the Buryat culture from the ancient times, is one of the main themes of creativity Zhamso Radnaev. The sensation of harmony of the world, pleasure of life consists in this close connection. The delight for the beauty of nature connects all characters of a picture "Holiday of Snow": the girl who has left to admire on falling snow, flying birds and skipping bull.

The “Winter” is touched with the same a nature and man проникнута and it seems that between the little man sitting on snow and the bird flying above him occurs the conversation about the winter, about life, about home place, that is seen on the second plan.

The composite construction of a picture "Winter" is characteristic for many works Zhamso, with the size close to a square. Such format concentrates attention of the spectators and involves them in a space of canvas. The figure of the man is displaced to the left from the centre, and the central point is on a line of horizon, where there are hills covered with snow and the sky. The multiplane construction forces to peer into these open spaces to contemplate them.

In general, the canvases of the artist dispose to long glancing. Compositions of the pictures inspire to pass sensation from infinity of space, and motives of the image. The infinity of space of many paintings fills simple scenes with deep sense, deduces it for a level of a usual household genre. These sketches seem to be played before this infinity. At least, such a feeling comes looking on a picture "Circus", in which the young actors are placed in a landscape with steppe, hills and sky. And it is easy to present, that the same steppe and sky not only behind them, but also ahead of them, as it possible to understand, looking on a picture "Contemplation".

The small man before green steppe, which is closed with a ridge of mountains, - actually, it is plot of this picture. Representing the man from the back, the artist forces us to look at a landscape with eyes of the hero and also to feel himself a part of land. The traditional for the Buryat cult of the Earth, passes through the works of the artist. The picture "Sound of the Earth" is remarkable in this respect, in which at a minimum of representational means the artist reaches(achieves) the large expressiveness. A boundless landscape with steppe both sky and pose of the man laying on the ground are executed of such deep sense that it seems behind this image there is all history of life of the people.

The artist makes sense of the image addressing to the simple plots. In many respects the picture "Sound of the Earth" is symbolical, same it is possible to say about the "Dream".

Theme of dream the artist developed not only once. In "Summer Dream" he sates a composition with household details, representing figures on a floor at a widely open door in an environment of a household utensils. The landscape, were seen behind a door, expands space, uniting the man with natural environment.

In the "Dream" the image of household details is shown up to a minimum. The coverlet with sleeping figures lays directly on ground, and the high sky is seen above them. All atmosphere of a picture, the poses, in which the figures are represented, well pass their boundary condition. This picture forces to recollect Pavel Kuznetsov’s works, written on the same theme. The accord of jobs speaks about a fidelity of the found intonations and other case is achieved harmony between a nature and a man, passing which the artists reaches symbolical sounding.

It is necessary to note character of the image, natural, instead of social context of existence of the heroes of pictures Zhamso Radnaev,, that practically all his works are filled with the feeling of historical memory.

The set of associations, including historical, is caused by the "Message". The painting differs laconic and large expressiveness. The horse and the man riding directly on the spectator are represented as a single unit. And, it seems, that behind them has remained not only boundless steppe, but also history with its wars and attacks.

The same feelings are also caused by the "Call of Ancestors". On the first sight, it is simple a landscape with a wooden structure and grazed horse, but spears in the roof and in the ground remind of the last times and fights.

Time and space are those categories, outside of which the creativity Zhamso Radnaev can not be clear. One of his pictures is called "Passed Time". A picture this both about eternity and fragility simultaneously. The nature is eternal: the wood, lakes, heaven and birds flying in the sky - but what the man does is perishable.

The characteristic of creativity Zhamso Radnaev would be incomplete if not to note one more remarkable feature of his art: it is humor, with what the majority of pictures of the artist are painted. The artist looks at the heroes aside and often with his kind smile. "The First Concert" touched with humor, charming picture representing the ridiculous girl with widely opened mouth. The only listener of a concert is a calf turned away from the singer. "In the Countryside" causes a smile with the image hardly sitting drunk old man with a bottle. With the large vivacity and fidelity the characters in ridiculous scene from national life under the name "Fight" are passed. Humor - component of many works of the artist. The humor, as well as many other characteristic features of painting Раднаева, connects his art with national creativity. As any more of time was emphasized, the art of the artist has developed on deep mastering of national traditions. He has connected these traditions, having fastened their individual vision, Zhamso Radnaev were created with the world of the images. Also consists in an alloy of traditions with skill and imagination of the artist originality of this world. ''
