Robert Peterson was born in 1943 in Chicago, Illinois. He began drawing as a child with rheumatic fever when he was confined to a hospital bed. When he was eight years old, he moved with his family to Albuquerque, New Mexico. He spent much time in school drawing because his hearing was diminishing. His parents enrolled him in the New Mexico School for the Deaf in Santa Fe and later he attended Gallaudet College in Washington, D.C. before returning to Albuquerque in the late 1960s.
