Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks. Simonides

Matt Doust

"Matt Doust presented a collection of large oil portraits, drawings and video work in this solo exhibition. Exhibiting exquisite detail and attention to the minutae of the human landscape, Doust used portraiture to boldly map an intriguing interpretation of external physicality and internal impressions. Obsessions makes reference to a series of works portraying strangers, whilst recollections focuses on portraits that strive to capture the exuberance of childhood. Finally, Doust offers video portraits of the exhibition's subjects as they are captured gazing into a mirror, a process that embodies consideration of self and imbues the footage with a sense of voyeuristic intimacy."
