Painting is silent poetry, and poetry is painting that speaks. Simonides

Peter Cox

Born in New York in 1942, Peter Cox received his training at the New York-Phoenix School of Design, the Parsons School and the Art Students League. Cox's work has been selected for such annuals as the National Academy of Design (New York), Artists of America (Denver), and touring exhibitions including West Publishing's "Art and the Law." Commissioned portraits by Peter Cox include those of William McChesney Martin and Henry Ford II. Twice the recipient of gold medals from the National Arts Club, Peter Cox has won gold medals from the National Pastel Society on two occasions. Critic Ed McCormack (ARTspeak) notes, "Peter Cox is subject to a broader, more complex range of anxieties and social ironies. It is these that give his paintings their uniquely contemporary power."

In addition to having works in many public and private collections, Peter Cox has received several important awards including: Gold Medal - Pastel Society of America, New York 1984; Gold Medal - National Arts Club, New York, 1978, 1988, 1997; John Gordon Memorial Award - Society of the Four Arts, Palm Beach, FL, 1986; Certificate of Merit - National Academy of Design, New York, 1988; and most recently the Gary Melchers Award - Artist Fellowship.
