Born in Palermo in 1963. Lives in Rome

Perceiving photography as a trace of reality, Daniela Papadia alters these documents through painting, creating works characterized by their surreal atmosphere and by figures who appear to be released from the force of gravity. The themes she affronts refer to multiculturalism and the transformations of contemporary society. She actually seems to study places and situations of spontaneous aggregation, portraying various relational dynamics and shifting them to the desert, a highly symbolic place (Save my name, 2005 series). This is joined by biblical and mythological suggestions, to which the representations of female figures are tied. The image of the woman becomes the metaphor of a physical and spiritual, at times painful but necessary, rebirth (Inside me, 2005). Alongside her painting cycles, Papadia has made videos dealing with the same subjects, building a reflection on the relationship between individual and collective identity and the meaning of certain daily rites.
