David Paskett

President of The Royal Watercolour Society

Acclaimed internationally and considered one of England's leading watercolourists, David Paskett's glimpses of everyday Chinese life make compelling viewing.

''China continues to be a constant source of inspiration for my paintings. I am drawn to the markets, quay sides and junctions where bridges meet road, rail and water.

Always intrigued by back streets where daily tasks are performed with old buildings and modern architecture as a backdrop.

It may have been the momentary theatrical effect of strong light and shadow upon some otherwise unremarkable wayside paraphernalia, imbuing it with a sense of drama that made me take a second look.

Perhaps I would be halted in my tracks by a group of people and objects engaged in a 'visual conversation'. Or I would recognize a moment of enhanced tranquility in some quiet corner.

David Paskett was born in 1944 in London. He studied fine art at Hornsey College of Art. His distinctive watercolour technique is founded in oil and tempera painting with emphasis on drawing. Intrigued by still life groupings seen on streets and waterways, his work is characterized by detail, clear shadows, controlled tone and rhythmic repeated pattern.

David Paskett lived in Hong Kong from 1986-1990. He worked as an artist at London's Science Museum 1991 and was artist in residence at the Pitt Rivers Museum, Oxford 1992-1993. David Paskett was elected as a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2001 and elected as Vice-President of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2007
