Oscar Lakeman

"I’d been painting tight, realistic, paintings with an airbrush for years, and I really wanted to get my hands in the paint.... throw it, smear it, pour it.....loosen things up. I wanted something tactile and expressive.
In one of those moments in the studio, looking for inspiration, the solution was right in front of me. My cups, and jars, and brushes, and the mess I make every day, were the perfect subject.... paintings about painting.
Over the years, the subject of the Container paintings has remained the same, but the technique has evolved into a much more juicy, wet, painterly, less hard-edged approach. Up to my elbows in paint, there is as much paint on the floor and walls of my studio, as on the canvas.
The Container Series has attracted a wide and loyal audience over the years. It’s very gratifying to have an audience for my work. "
