''Paul Oxborough was born in Minnesota, USA in 1965. He began his studies at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design before entering a four-year apprenticeship at the Atelier Lessuer; a rigorous program that adheres to a stringent French academic tradition.
Since his first New York solo exhibition in 2000, Oxborough has been the subject of numerous articles and reviews in such publications as ArtNews, Art & Antiques, Southwest Art, and CNN. His awards include First Place in the Artist's Magazine Portrait Competition, several Awards of Excellence from Communication Arts magazine and the President's Award from the American Society of Portrait Artists. This year Oxborough submitted a work entitled 'Portrait of Javier' into the BP Portrait Award. This work was accepted and exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery this summer and will travel to Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens and The Scottish National Portrait Gallery, Edinburgh later this year.
He frequently travels with his family throughout Europe and the United States for inspiration. The range of Oxborough's subject matter seems unlimited and varies from intimate interiors illuminated by flickering candles to laconic landscapes drenched in the noonday sun to a child's face touched by the first rays of morning light.''

The portrait is of Stefon Alexander, a Minnesota-based hip-hop artist known as P.O.S.. Alexander was a willing model and participated in several sittings. The strong top-lighting was chosen to mimic that used for P.O.S.’s stage performances while the portrait aims to show his strong personality.
