Philip M. Buller

"Philip Buller is known for representational paintings that transcend literal narratives through their ambiguity of historic time, suggestion of universal themes and overriding intensity of feeling.
He has taught private classes in the U.S. & Europe and at the Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University in northern California.

Philip Buller has been leading painting retreats since 1994 to both Greece and Italy. He enjoys inviting artists, from beginners to professionals, to immerse themselves deeply in the creative process in these magnificent settings. More than one hundred artists from all parts of the United States have participated, with an average of 12 artists in each retreat.

"The longer I paint the more I realize that the practice of seeing is at the center of the work of painting. There is something about having two full weeks in a foreign land which can awaken a possibility for clear seeing. We are freed from the structure of our daily lives. We have time to focus. Moving in a different landscape, we hear the music of a different language. Our senses feel awakened. relaxing into this space and time, we can open toward the possibility of deep learning. For these reasons I am inviting artists with similar interests to join me in an opportunity for satisfying work and spirited conversation in a beautiful and ancient setting."
